Hey Friends. Apologies for the hiatus. I've been building and developing a new project called hover, in which I offer conscious styling advice.

Either way, I definitely appreciate those of you who have reminded of the lack of "new" posts on MakeFashionFair. The fact that a few of you still check on its status makes me smile in so many ways.

Here we are - Day 365 of the Make Fashion Fair Project...

I know we all say it but it feels like just yesterday that I embarked on this little journey, inspired and enthusiastic, from a little Mississippi River town in Wisconsin. Many things have transformed and shifted since those inaugural steps.

I sit here in New York City - my newfound home - where the connections are continual and the forward-moving events, never-ending. Given the nature of the situation, in its full-circle state, I'd like to take a moment to thank some of those over-inspiring beings who brought me motivation at various points throughout the past year.

It's a pendulum - constantly moving and shifting - changing and evolving - as it encounters new cultural, economical, social, and global tides. Each tread is comprised of lessons, mistakes, knowledge, and awarenesses. The learning opportunities are constant and the teachers are all around us. I will continue to keep my eyes and ears open to ideas and innovations, thoughts and concerns, frustrations and enthusiasms, because each of these moments provides us with the tools to move forward, respecting people and the planet along the way.

The flood waters are rushing in along the backwaters of the Mississippi. It's quite a site and as overwhelming as the H2O is, my new trusty Roma boots were the ideal garment of choice for exploring the current situation. After covering the Roma Boot story on Ecouterre recently - "Buy A Pair Of Roma Boots, Give A Pair To A Child In Need" - I was certain Romas would be my future wellies of choice.

Made Fairly in China, purchasing a pair does not only mean your feet will stay dry, but a pair will also be given to a less-fortunate child to keep their toes warm and dry.

Today is the final day of March and the final year I can endure a birthday celebration void of my favorite father. We've been bonded by our aries tendencies since I flew into this world. He and I, with our tenacious tact and willful minds, never cease to impress those in our presence - our dynamics are outstanding when it comes to debate and discussion. I cannot deny that a large portion of my confidence and personal strength are testament to his influence. A constant go-getter and self-motivated creator - he is the one who makes things happen and has helped me realize that I too, can be the patron of my own future. My thoughts today are with him in Wisconsin, wishing I could share a piece of Mama Jenkins' Westhaven Cake with him.

Finding bits of environmental beauty like this within the concrete jungle always inspire moments that bring me back home.

My quick weekend jaunt to the windy city was well-worth the trip -- the sound of Trevor Hall's beats mixed with unforgettable bro-sis moments made for a most contenting couple of days. As I pondered this post and glanced at my photos, I realized that either I surround myself with sustainable souls or there's a chance my make-fashion-fair-mentality might be wearing off on those around me.

Below, you can see my brother Forest and friend Adam - all sporting their eco duds. Reused, recycled, and organic cottons, all beside a beautiful being: Trevor Hall.

As Maria and I dolled up for the evening, our dress up time resulted in me styling her final look, which tends to happen when outfit choices are being made and I'm in the room. The outcome: a complete ethical finalé for her nighttime attire. The peeps in my social circle are definitely transforming into more ethical dressers - whether it's via my influence or not, I'm beyond inspired and overwhelmingly ecstatic that evolutions toward eco-chic style is apparent and visible within my personal ecumene.

It's a sibling reunion - bird and tree back together - reunited in NYC to share as many quality moments as possible prior to my best friend+hermano's upcoming adventure. As a natural wanderer, Forest will be embarking on a 4-5 month trek, south to north, along the Pacific Crest Trail. What a journey this will be - an environmental enthusiast at heart, he will be leaving his footsteps on 2663 miles of western wild land. I hope to join him at some point along the way, to soak up the spirituality and beauty of Mother Earth, alongside my bro.

Forest will be gathering capital via donations along the way to donate to Camp AmeriKids - the beloved Camp I work at each summer. On his new blog, he will also share experiences throughout the adventure with all of us - videos + photos + journal entries for those of us who wish we could be there on the trail with him. Education is on my mind as of late - especially with regard to our influential younger years. I'm increasingly more aware of the depth to which those moments and experiences can frame the lens from which we view the world today.

Planted in the middle of such an expansive and diverse City, I've recently thought more about the impact my upbringing has had on what life means to me. I’m overwhelmed with fortunate feelings – the values my parents instilled within me are aspects of life that I embrace more each day.

In my home, life is about the importance and appreciation of family, food, being active, and breathing fresh air in beautiful natural surroundings – all these pieces are integral in the composition of my current and future endeavors. And I have to thank my lucky stars that growing up as a Jenkins meant understanding and internalizing these principles. I am contented to realize that my parents’ influence is driving the foundation I am gradually developing for myself. While I’m open to and engaged in external educational opportunities, home schooling - for me - swayed and framed my priceless inner ethics.

Iron & Wine at Radio City turned out to induce many inward-thinking moments for me this weekend. A most contenting musical event, the concert seemed to generate and conjure thoughts of depth inside me. The notes were beautiful, Sam's voice flawless, and the stage scene outrageous -- all accenting an awe-inspiring atmosphere.

The reality that I have only been living in NYC for 3 months has arrived -- so many connections, so many events, so much action, in such a short period of time. It appears to me currently that this City is the epicenter of the networking world. I feel fortunate to be here, and grateful for the new and old friends who surround me in this animated and activated place. Looking forward to what lies ahead, as I attempt to breathe and enjoy the moments along the way.

Week 38 - Fiery Chill.

The cold has blown in from the Midwest and somehow that bitter chill in the air has never become at all familiar to me. Considering my upbringing in the frigid, below-zero conditions of Wisconsin, I should be more "accustomed", but each year it strikes again, shocking my body and instigating dreams of faraway lands where orchids grow wild and monkeys and macaws roam naturally.

Apologies in advance for the rant. I know I've already had my moment in the sun to spout off about disposable coffee cups, but I cannot refrain from noting my recent experience at a café in Williamsburg. I like to think I work somewhat diligently to avoid paper coffee cups - I always use my reusable cup if I'm on the go, and if I'm sitting and sipping for a while, I ask for a mug. I've recently bumped into frustrating situations when asking for a non-paper cup; many coffee shops seem to no longer even stock the old fashioned, ceramic drinking vessels that provide the warmth and comfort of the coffee culture in its authenticity.

With regard to the steamy situation I confronted Saturday afternoon -- I ordered 2 soy cappuccinos "to stay" and explained to the barista that I wanted "real mugs". He proceeded to place the real deal in front of his co-worker, providing me with a bit of reassurance. As I turned around, sat down, and knit a couple more stitches, something very unfortunate happened: 2 paper cups appeared in front of me, filled with my drink of choice. My stomach sank, and as I gave a sneer toward the espresso machine, my friend gave me a reflective look of disgust.

Honestly, we have to be our own promoters of change when it comes to this cup catastrophe - because the coffee shopkeepers are not helping us out...at all.

At dawn in the east village, it was sleet/snow/raining and honestly quite the treacherous way to start the day. But, I turned inward to find my tropical warmth within, so Amanda could capture a couple moments de la moda. I was definitely seeking sunshine and brilliance, when I decided to throw on such a vibrantly-colored head scarf -- at times, these extra umphs via color and style can elevate a dreary and otherwise less inspiring day. However, I think often of the legendary Alexander McQueen when Mother Nature has not instigated my favorite weather shift.

As McQueen said so eloquently:
"There is no better designer than nature."
And this is why my respect & appreciation for the earth continues to grow exponentially, whatever the weather may be.

This photo shoot is undoubtedly a perfect example of the realities that living the manic, chaotic, and perpetual New York City lifestyle produce. My good friend & photographer Amanda has become quite the talented one, instigating photo shoots in the spur of the moment, and producing beautiful outcomes in the blink of an eye. This one in particular was taken last night, while on a brisk walk to a music venue in Williamsburg. We both spotted this adorable orange, vintage V-dub, and instantaneously I threw my coat off, while she prepared her camera for action. It may be random and impromptu, but this serendipitous approach allows me the chance to make all the little things I love in life, possible.

Just because it's absolutely unforgettable, I have to explain the back-story on this dress. Last spring, just before embarking on my 365-day "Make Fashion Fair" pledge, my friend Emily and I journeyed out on a road trip from Wisconsin to anywhere that was south and east. Along the way, after camping and exploring Mammoth Cave National Park, we happened upon a yard sale in rural Kentucky. We of course stopped to see what we could find. Amongst antique kids' toys and rifles that were actually for sale, we spotted this dress. While to the initial look, it was frumpy and exceptionally matronly, I loved the pattern and snagged it for a buck. Now, it's a favorite in my closet - after cutting off the top and upcycling it, I've worn it as a skirt, a dress, and hopefully soon a re-worked shirt.

Week 35 - Bouquets & Bikes

While I am a bike addict, I haven't yet had the courage to get out there on the New York City streets. I keep moving via my addiction to running, but I'm craving some real wheel-turning fun. I recently stumbled across a wicked non-profit called Recycle-A-Bike. Based in NYC, they provide youth training and promote environmental education initiatives in local public schools, while also guiding respected after-school youth programs. When you purchase a bike from their shop, not only are you getting something recycled/upcycled, but you are also contributing to the rockin' activities they are making happen for cycling kids in the City.

Note to self: purchase refurbished bike from Recycle-A-Bike when my fear of the city streets subsides.

Straight up, this week's post is dedicated to the promotion of reusable coffee mugs and the critique of the rapidly generating accumulation of paper cups in our landfills. Paper cups are undoubtedly convenient, I agree. However, slightly adjusting the "convenient option" in order to reduce waste and better our environmental status is as simple as making a shift in your daily routine.

For me, coffee is an integral element of my lifestyle - I love it and I need it. Therefore, the investment in a reusable mug has been essential in reducing the waste I would have otherwise continued to generate. Since I relocated to a big city so suddenly, I feel overwhelmingly aware of the way everyone continuously consumes via the "grab-and-go" style, that always equates to more waste.

According to a study done by the Environmental Defense Fund and published in Sustainability is Sexy, the number of disposable cups projected to be thrown out in 2010 is 23 billion. YUCK. This is disgusting. Next time you buy a coffee in your local café, ask for a ceramic mug if you intend to hang around, or invest in a reusable mug if you are one of those "on-the-run" people. Each one of us can insert this one act into our everyday routine to truly influence a change in our cup consumption.

Falling Whistles...Today's look features a necklace that not only exudes beauty, but more importantly serves as an educational tool to share a vital message.

This is the weight upon many young boys' shoulders in Congo. After being kidnapped from their families and trained to fight, they are given 1 weapon: a whistle.

That's right -- October is FAIR TRADE MONTH, a time to celebrate our fabulous farmers and growers and producers, whether they are cultivating, sewing, weaving, or crafting somewhere around the world, or in our own necks of the woods.

Looking back, I cannot believe the transformation in mainstream recognition of "Fair Trade" in only the past 5 years.

I still remember my first true encounter with "Fair Trade" as a realistic concept -- I was interning with KFAI Radio in Minneapolis, MN while attending Hamline University. I was handed my first story to cover -- an interview with Etica's Co-founder, Tiffany Thompson, to highlight Fair Trade Month in October of 2006.

At that time, I had heard of Fair Trade Coffee, and I knew it was the "better option", but apart from that, I was quite ignorant on the realities behind a Fair Trade product. In a little chat with Thompson of Etica, ("Ethics"), a Fair Trade wine company, my eyes were opened and my mind was engaged in an entirely new realm of business, economics, and global development.

Little did I know that in a small interview with Thompson, a spark would be ignited deep within me, influencing my future lifestyle choices and career passions.

In honor of FAIR TRADE MONTH, let's remember the impact Fair Trade and Ethical Business can have on fellow friends and eclectic environments around the globe, and maintain its values as an essential element of our future existence.

What does Fair Trade mean?
The response to this recurring question is complex because its understanding is diverse, even amongst organizations and labeling bodies involved in the industry. However, in 2001, four of the world's fair trade labeling groups came together to agree on a definition. Acting under the acronym "FINE", fair trade was defined as:

A trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in the South. (Russell, 2010)*

Carla Venticinque-Osborn and Aaron Osborn have developed relationships in Guatemala, now owning a production workshop, where they employ 25 artisans and 4 administrators. Their hand crafted and fair trade booties, oxfords, and slip ons merge eclectic, colorful textiles with recycled tire and leather soles. The concoction is hip yet versatile, and a key piece for every ethical wardrobe.

earth day.

in light of recent celebrations of the environment and people around the world, i have decided to make a conscious oath:

In honor of mother earth and her global citizens, I vow to no longer purchase ANY clothing that has been made unethically, or blatantly harmed people or the environment in its making, for the next 365 days. If the available ethical and fair trade labels cannot serve my tastes and desires (as fashion is my passion) -- I pledge to only purchase apparel which is re-made or re-cycled - vintage or re-worked.

thinking about our earth and our people...mentally and actively for 365 days -- 52 weeks.

i will update with photos of the ethical outfits i create each week throughout the year.

fair! ... but disappointing.

Every time i notice a new "fair trade" or "ethical" fashion endeavor in my area, motivation and hope erupts deep inside of me...

...but unfortunately tends to be quickly followed by a depressed disinterest.

I feel that the thoughts and the education and the movement to invest time and effort in creating ethical and/or fair trade clothing is"happening" around me, which is absolutely thrilling.

However, after i move through the initial euphoria of that moment, i stop and look and ponder the pieces of "fair trade" or "ethical" clothing before my eyes, only to feel a dark cloud of dejection wave over me in the realization that style was not considered yet again in the creation of this fashion line.

Is it that the mainstream fashion industry is fighting the incorporation of ethical labels, and therefore "fashionistas" are not part of the eco fashion movement?...

Or are some ethical labels attempting to separate themselves from the mainstream fashion world due to their animosity toward that realm {based on the decades of exploitation of people and the environment for profit by big fashion}?...

...I don't want to answer "yes" to either of these questions because i have witnessed the anomalies that blow my mind...but i can't help but ask "why" so many new ethical labels disappoint me.

As coco chanel said it so wisely,

"A style does not go out of style as long as it adapts itself to its period. When there is an incompatibility between the style and a certain state of mind, it is never the style that triumphs."

STYLE -- something so individual. personal. uniquely interpreted. fluid --

but also something that has been inspired and influenced by fashion designers, who for ages have set the trends -- artists who share their creations with those of us who crave to view the next adaptation the season brings because of our RESPECT for this particular art form.

So, why aren't new ethical designs adapting their style, on a large scale?

yes, production of fair trade and/or ethical pieces is complex...

but to make fair trade fashion mainstream and respected by the artists of that world, new ethical companies must pay attention to the global fashion world, and evolve with the period...

I want to be so wowed by ethical fashion that i don't think it's ethical, until after i thought it was fashion.
